RECAP of May 14 Lawrence School Committee

Quick RECAP of the Lawrence School Committee of May 14

Report on Principal Consolidation: The School Committee last year decided to consolidate the principals of the different schools that are part of the Lawrence High School Campus.  The LHS Campus went from 6 Principals to 3 Principals.  Superintendent requested that a School Committee member propose a motion to increase the number of Principals back to 6.

I requested that more time be given before a decision was made to give enough time for the School Committee members to think through this decision – we will be discussing this again at our next meeting.  I also requested that a written report be emailed to the School Committee members.

-Last year Bill Gates Foundation came out with a report that was damaging to the Small Schools idea.  LHS is built around the concept of small schools and Bill Gates was one of the funders of the school.

I asked that the Report be given to all of the School Committee members and that the Lawrence School Department prepare a report addressing it.

Contract Extension for Superintendent:
School Committee Unanimously voted on a motion to renew the contract for the Superintendent until December 31st or a Superintendent is appointed.

Parent Involvement Plan
I presented the following motion to the School Committee:

Motion to Establish a Parent Involvement SubCommittee for the purpose of creating a district wide parent involvement plant that:

Reviews the strength & weaknesses of the Lawrence Public Schools;
Will make recommendations on parent involvement to the School Committee; and
Will, upon approval of the School Committee, set reachable goals for the school and district.
